Standing ovations used to be thought of as the ultimate form of applause. They certainly were when King George II stood up during a performance of Handel's Messiah in startled admiration of the "Hallelujah Chorus." Audiences still routinely follow his majesty's example at this point in the oratorio, albeit now largely as a matter of tradition.
